Swanwick hosts two of the National Air Traffic Services' major control centres, covering both en-route and terminal air traffic, a genuinely unusual landmark for a village of this size, and one that sets it apart from every other place on this list.
A village without a fixed centre
Unlike Botley or Sarisbury Green, Swanwick has never really had one defined village centre, and housing has spread steadily since the 1980s to the point where it's now effectively merged with the newer development at Whiteley. That means a genuine mix of older and newer roofs sitting close together.
Nature reserve on old clay pits, and a rail-fed fruit trade
Swanwick Lakes Nature Reserve, covering around eighty acres of former clay pits, sits close to the village, while Swanwick's railway station was once a major point for shipping locally grown strawberries out by rail during the late nineteenth century. Fareham Borough Council is the planning authority covering the village today.
